As a result, they are predisposed to bacterial infections by capsulated organisms such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae. Pulmonary infarction may also cause pulmonary shadowing on the chest X-ray – but is less likely in the absence of pleurisy – and severe breathlessness.
